There are at least 50 state parks in the grand “Big Sky Country” of Montana. Depending on your interests, there are state parks in various categories, i.e. parks devoted to the cultural aspects of Montana’s history, as well as recreational parks.
There is much Native American history to be learned from this state. Montana’s first white settlement and part of the history of the Lewis and Clark expedition can be found within the state in many of the interpretive centers. Within Pictograph Cave State Park one can view the pictographs left by prehistoric dwellers. In First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, visitors may learn of the natives way of life and have a better understanding of why these people were so dependent on the buffalo. The spring season may be the best season of all to visit Montana’s awesome state parks, due to the amazing weather waiting to greet you.
On the Crow Reservation within Plenty Coups State Park, one can find an educational interpretive center and visit the home of the last traditional chief of the Crow Nation, Chief Plenty Coups and his wife “Strikes the Iron”.
Natural beauty and many grand scenic wonders within the state parks can be found in abundance. Recreation abounds for those wishing to go boating, fishing, swimming or water skiing. Camping sites can be found in many of the state’s parks where prices are nominal. Additionally, vehicles with Montana State License plates pay no admission fees into the park. Non-residents may obtain an annual pass for the park entrance fee for $25.00.
