Wyoming State Parks

Wyoming is the tenth largest U.S. state by size; most of the state is composed of mountain ranges of the Rocky Mountain West. The eastern portion of the state is known as the High Plains. There are many state parks in Wyoming, and each one offers an array of outdoor activities.

Bear River State Park, located in Evanston, is open year round. With almost 300 acres, it is great for hiking, picnicking, bicycling and wildlife viewing. In the winter months, you can enjoy skiing and snowshoeing. There is also a small head of captive Bison and elk that the public can enjoy. Buffalo Bill State Park is located in Cody and offers camping, picnicking and trout fishing. The park is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. The reservoir in the park is one of the best places around for wind surfing. Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis has one of the largest single mineral hot springs. Gallons of water pour from the spring every 24 hours at a temperature of 135 degrees Fahrenheit. The park is open year round with indoor and outdoor pools, and there is a herd of buffalo that roam the hills behind the main portion of the park.

How about a tour of the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site in Laramie? Built in 1872, this 190-acre facility once held Butch Cassidy and other notorious outlaws. There are plenty of other great parks to visit in Wyoming, including Boysen, Curt Gowdy, Edness K.Wilkins, Glendo, Guernsey, Hawk Springs, Keyhole, Seminoe and Sinks Canyon. Some are open year round, while others are day parks only. However, each one has beautiful views, nature trails and many other attractions.
