Nicaragua is fortunate to be located in Central America between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea with long coastlines on either side. Still one of the poorer countries in North America, Nicaragua is emerging as a vacation destination for those interested in hiking, exploring volcanoes and enjoying exquisite vistas.
Approximately one-third of Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America, is covered in rainforests and divided in half by a mountain ranges and volcanoes. For hikers, Volcan Maderas is a must. Since the volcano is dormant, you are able to climb to the top and actually go into the crater, Laguna de Volcan Maderas where you can birdwatch, and watch for monkeys and snakes. There are two paths, one more difficult than another. A native guide is recommended as well as appropriate clothing, snacks and water. You'll want to climb Volcan Cerro Negro to see its steaming craters, rest to watch a glorious sunset and prepare to take a 600-meter ride on a board down the incline. Nicaragua is full of parks. Day trips and week-long excursions are available. The largest park, BOSAWAS, is the perfect place to view spectacular waterfalls and jungle canopy. Depending on your mountain choice to climb, you may well experience several climate changes. Biodiversity will be evident at each level.
Visitors to Lake Nicaragua will be eagerly watching for freshwater sharks left behind when volcanic action formed land separated the lake from the ocean. One of the largest cathedrals in Central America is Catedral de Leon with towering marble columns, ornate frescoes and neo-classical architecture. From its roof, you have a splendid view of the city. The colorful and energizing Nicaraguan cuisine, music and dance are framed by the premier scenic environment.
